Week 10: School Even While Sick

This week started off cold, rainy and with deep congestion for K. But, by the weekend, the sun had come out. We were able to enjoy a walk around the lake and K, A1, and Dad were able to enjoy a bike ride.

Since we had our first snow this week, we decided to make homemade snow cones with homemade snow cone syrup for science.

Good ol' Ninja blender
Coconut or root beer flavored were the choices.

One our walk around the lake, we also tested the PH of the lake water and one the streams. They were pretty close but the lake was slightly more acicidic.

Back at home we pulled out a Mel science kit and used electricity to etch this design on an iron plate.
We used heat to change another iron plate into a rainbow design.
And a copper dissolving substance (salt and copper sulfate) to make this one.
It required boiling water, so we took some of that hot water, once it was no longer boiling, and made it re-boil using our vacuum chamber. Water boils at a lower temperature in a vacuum chamber.

Science wasn't done yet, as this week's I Brick build was all about earthquakes and how to build an earthquake resistant building.

Speaking of building, a lot of it has been happening this week.

Legos aren't the only thing being used to create this week. For clay craft club, K made 3 animals: a snake, a snail, and a snow leopard.
A little embarrassing for me, I forgot he was sick and hanging out in a robe that day until we turned on the camera for him to share his creations. Oops.

His other clubs were space club and chess club.

We did manage to  get a little math and language arts done as well. We went over adjectives and worked on cursive.
