More Rocks to Climb on and We Love Animals

The highlight of the week for me, was taking the kids to the Fiery Furnace, which you can read more about here.  We also found some other big rocks for the kids to climb on while we explored another trail.

As far as the rest of the week goes...

Math: A1 ended up doing two week of math in one.  Maybe he's seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and excited for summer. Maybe he just really likes ratios.

LA: Reading, writing and typing.

Science:  March Mammal Madness continues.  After round one A1 has a massive lead 26 out of 32. J and I are tied at 19.  Now on to round 2. We'll keep you updated. Do you think a cat can beat 2 lions?  We'll find out.

A1's Animal Science Video Summaries

Crows are very smart. You may have known that, but I mean the smartest of crows may be smarter than people! They have short and long term memory. Once they did a advanced test test on them and they acted as if it was as simple as breathing. Even when they could get a treat that wasn't as good, they completed a test to get a better treat.

Ants! Ants ants ants! Alright, when you think of successful animals you probably think of the deep sea animals or lions and other animals that are at the top of the food chain but... it's ants! Ants live on every content except Antarctica and they have extreme strength in numbers making them the most successful, but not the top of the food chain.  Oh, and yes the queen of the nests mate again but males die after it.  🐜

Inland Trypan is the most venomous snake in the world. Its no surprise its venom is stronger than a king cobra because king cobras just put a lot of venom in. The less toxic one takes less time to happen, but the Inland Trypan more deadly and the venom is hard to stop. The first part of the Trypan venom just slows down and turns off body parts for a short time. But the second is made to not be stopped and to stop the entire body from working permanently.  Well they go to strike and do it again and repeat until you run away or you are dead. Lesson learned!  Stay away from black headed snakes! In other parts of the world at least. 🐍

How to Bring and Extinct animals back to life? Well, there are three ways but I am not going through all of them. One is cloning. Once scientist found the last remaining of a goat type and got her DNA and put it into a normal goat, making a clone. Sadly, she did not last long.

Cuddle Fish are crazy! They use their color changing abilities to mate and some go crazy and split their colors in half so males think it's a female and the female thinks he is a male and he gets a mate.

Why Hybrid Animals May Take Over the North? Well, once a hunter was hunting in the north and found a bear that was extra fury, extra large and had spots of brown with claws as big as a grizzly! It was neither a polar bear or a grizzly, but a mix and combining into a powerful bear that is perfect for the north and climate change. They are becoming more common and are over powering the polar bears and they can mate with polar bears, grizzlies, and each other! The water in the north may be getting a new animal as well because beluga whales and narwhals are mating into a new water animal meaning hybrids are probably going to take all of the north. 🐻

Can humans breath under water? Surprisingly yes, we can with new technology we found by filling a persons lungs with a special liquid. One human, Frank Falejczyk, has successfully breathed oxygenated liquid. What's dangerous is breathing air again if all the water isn't removed from your lungs. They've made rats breath underwater but found CO2 buildup eventually killed them.

The secret language of trees is make a connection with fungi! Yes, trees send warnings and resources to each other, and just talk through fungi connection. Trees are stronger in numbers and getting rid of one means getting rid of a lot! 🍃

Animals of the States

Virginia is where typical northern animals and typical southern animals meet. They have both black bears and alligators. They also have more fish species then other eastern states.

New York has  giant rats that are evolving to the neighborhoods they live in, becoming genetically distinct from each other. They also have giant racoons that are really smart and can solve puzzle and they learn human schedules like when trash day is.

North Carolina has laws saying no chickens crossing the roads. They have crocs but not enough so I'm still going to South Carolina to see the angry croc. They have some of the largest black bears in the world and the fire flies synchronize their light.

Rhode Island has produced the most famous chicken breed in the world. Lucky Rhode island.

Vermont is all about the cows and the maple syrup. Bats are a major life form and are in need of saving!🦇

Kentucky is the horse capital of the world. The soil makes the horses bones strong. 🐴

After our adventure in the Fiery Furnace, K made an arches landscape at school.

This week in addition to our usual learning, A2 enjoyed learning about water and rocks in the greenhouse.
Her and K also played with sensory bins.
And Coach helped them with an indoor obstacle course and fort building. She's the best dog.
