Colds, Flu, and More

This week was a bumpy road. After returning from my grandpa's funeral, which was held over the weekend, we all got hit with one sickness after another. First people had colds, then someone came down with the flu, which proceeded to spread.

However, between tissue boxes, trash cans, and barf bowls, we did manage to get a little school done.

Language Arts: A1 worked on an informative essay. We will continue working on this next week as he only got half of it written.

Math: He continued to work on a review. He only completed about half of what was planned. So we will continue this next week, too.

Science: A1 learned about tardigrades, how animals survive in the coldest places on Earth, and the incredible biology of humans.

Here he is with more:

  • Tardigrades can survive almost any environment on earth and even some time in space and are always the first into a place like an island made by an volcano.
  • Cold? No problem for many animals in Antarctica and the Artic. Many survive in water which is much colder then the air because they have blubber. Did you know that polar bears have blubber?
  • Humans have adapted to many environments such as some people who live in water have adapted to hold there breath for a very long time. Around 5 minutes in water and they do it around 10 times a day! Can you hold your breath that long?

For History, we watched another Episode of How the States Got Their Shapes.

Hawaii is missing islands on the map because they are military bases and what's in Area 51? Well, anyone that knows is not allowed to tell.

Presidents

Warren G Harding had a dog, named Laddie Boy, that had his own chair in meetings and  the White House held birthday party's for the dog.

Calvin Coolidge had a pet racoon named Rebecca. And he was the only president in history to be born on the Forth of July, which day many early presidents died on.

Herbert Hoover was known as the Great Humanitarian because he saved millions of people from starving in WWI. And he spoke Chinese with his wife so no one could understand them.

A1 also attended his online animal science class and book club.  Due to sickness, he missed piano lessons this week. He also missed the Valentine's party.

Before he was sick, he learned to make hash browns as a life skill.

The same day, him and A2 spent a lot of time playing outside. Then they cuddled up and read books. It was a precious moment.

A1 had Joy School and two Valentine's Day parties. One for the homeschoolers at the Forest School and one at her preschool.

There were puppies at Forest School

We also did a lesson in Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

We read a little in Little House on the Prairie, too.
