We like to do a mid-year review of our curriculum and see what has been good, what needs improvement, and what hasn't been as helpful for the kids' learning. After the review, we decided to scrap Exact Path, but will still continue with Singapore Primary Mathematics. In Language Arts, we will focus more on actually writing instead of Exact Path and spelling lists. A1 has always been very good about reading. For science, we will be doing cooking at least once a week and watching the YouTube Channel "Real Science" where A1 is able to lean fun facts about animals.
Math: Reviewing concepts previous learned. A1 is also in OpenEd's chess club.
Language Arts: A1 has been writing and doing typing lessons.
Science: A1 is in the OpenEd animal club. They are learning about how animals survive the winter.
He is also watching the Incredible Biology series on Real Science. This week A1 learned about the octopus, hammerhead shark, axolotl, and platypus. Here's A1 with what he's learned: Octopus can squish through anything lager than their small eye. Hammerheads can sense things under the sand. Axolotls can regrow any body part including the head and yes even the brain and eyes! Platypus have venom that's a lot like a reptiles.
He went on to learn more about the Venus fly trap, electric eel and sea horse. Here's A1 with more: Venus fly traps want nutrition not the meat from bugs. Electric eels can control their prey with small electrical zaps. The mother sea horse put her eggs into a pouch that's on the father, it takes 6 seconds.

And More!
For the month of January, A1 is participating in OpenEd clubs, taking piano lessons, working on a creating a card game and learning more US history.
Presidents of the United States
James Madison was the smallest president. First, he was against the Bill of Right and then he wrote it himself! Both his vice presidents died in office so he served around 3 years as president with no vice president.
James Monroe the first president to ride in a steam boat. He rode a mule from Paris to Madrid for the Louisiana purchase, but they said no. 15 years from then, he bought it. He held more elected offices then any other presidents. The capital of Liberia is named after him. He was the last founding father alive. He also died on July fourth.
John Quincy Adams was the son of John Adams. He might of kept a alligator in the white house bathtub! After being president, he was elected to the house of representatives. In a meeting he stood up to say something but then fell back down and died.
Andrew Jackson hated paper money. He was the only president to pay off the national debt. He liked cocked fighting. He killed Charles Dickinson in a duel. (He was shot by Dickinson and lived for 40 years with a bullet near his heart. He also survived the first ever presidential assassination attempt. After the assassin's pistols misfired, Jackson attacked him with his cane.)
Martin Van Buren was the first president to have English as a second language (Dutch was his first). He was also very boring. (First president born a US citizen)
William Henry Harrison served only 31 days as president. And was also very boring I can't remember any other fun facts. (Harrison, age 68, gave the longest inauguration speech in history. He did so without a coat or hat outside during bad weather. This gave him pneumonia and led to his death.)
