This week's highlight was the geography fair hosted by the local forest school. They are gracious enough to invite homeschoolers to join in their events.
J and K participated this year. J did her report in a question and answer style. What continent has a population of zero, but is inhabited year round? What continent has a volcano that throws lava bombs? And how many babies have been born in Antarctica? You then flip up the question to find the answer. Antarctica is inhabited year round by around 30 countries. Mount Erebus, which has a rare active lava lake, throws exploding lava bombs when it erupts. And 11 babies, mainly from Chile and Argentina in the 1970's were born in Antarctica, as the dictators were trying to claim the continent for their country. She also served ice as a "cultural food".
Despite J's helper eating part of her presentation, it turned out really well, and she learned how to adjust and adapt when the cat eats your homework.
K did his report on Egypt. He particularly liked learning about mummies and how the Nile is debatably the longest river in the world, competing with the Amazon River in South America. He also had a section where kids could try writing their name in hieroglyphics.

While J's presentation was being eaten by her helper, K and I realized he didn't have enough material to fill up an entire board. Just as we were about to rearrange things to make it look full, our kitty helper came and laid down on the project like a sphinx.
A light bulb went off and we realized we hadn't written anything about cats (or the sphinx). J told K the story of how the Persians used psychological warfare to win a battle against the Egyptians by painting the Egyptian Goddess, Bastet, who has a cat head, on their shields, and then driving a large group of cats and other sacred animals in front of their army. Rather than kill the sacred animals and destroy images of their goddess, the Egyptians fled and were conquered.
A1 did not participate in the geography fair, which worked out as he was sick that day. He worked more on Mia Academy and finished General Science.
Plus, we've been doing a lot of reading and creating.
