This week we finished the first part of our state's history (Grandpa's history book). We celebrated by making green Jell-O.
A1 made garlic bread as part of Basic Life Skills. For science/PE we made ice-cream in a bag by jumping around to music.
For science, we also played the Will-it-Dissolve game by mixing salt, sugar, flour, baking soda, baking powder, oil, and pepper in water.
We played Is-It-Magnetic, too.
J used her artistic talent to make this for our freezer. (My winter stock up may have gone too far.)
Speaking of food, we are making meals with the Eat 2 Explore Kits. For Geography, we are starting in the Americas. (Last week's Germany just happened to be an extra baking box the kids really wanted to do.)
The very first USA recipe was Chili and J wasn't impressed with their facts. Our conversation went something like this:
J: Chili is a Mexican food.
Me: It says it can be traced back to San Antonio in 1828.
J: Yeah, and in 1828 San Antonio was part of Mexico!
Upon J's suggestion, we made hamburgers as an authentic USA food. (Even though Google says they originated in Hamburg, Germany. Apparently, all our geography leads back to Germany.)
For world geography, we also brought out the Talking Globe. K and A2 love listening to the national anthems of various countries.
K finished reading Princess in Black and the Kitty Catastrophe.
A1 has been having fun exploring with the 3D printer.
And J has been enjoying her poetry unit in language arts. Here are a few of her works.
The salty ocean breeze Desert
whistles though the leaves hot dry
as periwinkle blue waves crash changing moving hiding
on a stardust yellow beach sand storms swirling
pillow soft clouds float by forbidden
on a cotton candy blue sky
the sea gulls soft cries fill the air
while dolphin's click near by
as I turn my gaze
I see crabs scuttling by
and turtles slowly making their way
to the aqua sea
as the sun starts to set
and the world go's to sleep
I sit and watch
the bright colors of the ocean
fade into the dark blue of night.
