It's Madness! March Mammal Madness That Is.

Math: This week was all about averages.  We had a good discussion on outliers, too.

Language Arts: A1 did typing lessons and read out loud to A2 in the blanket fort they built. He also worked on writing his fictional story and writing all the animals report below for you to enjoy.

Science: We are learning more about animals.  Here's A1 with more info from his Biology Videos:

Sloths fall out of trees! On purpose! Around 100 meters in the air! They are two times stronger then an adult man! They fall out of trees unhurt and climb the tree again! They are not warm blooded! And they aren't cold blooded either! They more switch between the two so when they are hot they switch to cold blooded, if too cold, they switch to warm blooded. They are the only known animal to do this.πŸ¦₯

Poison dart frogs are the most poisonous animal on earth! Well, at least the golden ones are. They have immunity to so many different types of of poisons and no knows how! Poison dart frogs don't even make poison! Instead, they use their preys poison to make one very deadly frog. There is not a antivenom or anti-poison to save people! Their only predator is the fire belly snake which has an immunity to their poison. 🐸

Emperor penguins are huge! They are about as tall as an adult! They are the largest penguin type. You probably didn't know that emperor penguins rely on the cold, snowy, and icy environment to live! It helps them escape predators, catch prey, and even move around by turning into a sled! (belly sliding! ) 🐧

Why Animal Eyes Look Weird Let's start with cats. Cats pupils can extend into a circle or squeeze into a slit. They do that because they are predators. It helps with night vision and hunting. If they didn't do that they wouldn't be able to see six times better then us! 🐈

Next up the cuddle fish! Cuddle fish have strange "W" shapes pupils! Now usually this would be bad because at some angels you'd only see up but at others you would only  see down. Now that would be strange! But they see better with these eyes and can see light we can't! Now I need a cuddle fish to tell me all the colors it can see... Or maybe not. It doesn't want to cuddle instead they put on a display made for hypnotizing. They are they only animal in the world to do this magical entrancing.😲 Ok lets get out of here!

Onto the last one for today, the owl! Owls are very good hunters that come out at night. That, and their secrets of soundless flight, has made them hard to find. Their eyes can't move so they have to move their head. That also would be strange! But there are good things too! They have eyes that are made for the night and catch lots of light for extreme night vision, catching small movement.πŸ¦‰ And with that I'm done with animals! GOOD BYE!✋

Our OpenEd teacher told us about March Mammal Madness. Where animal goes against animal in a fictional tournament to see who is champion. Not all the animals in the brackets are mammals, some of the contenders aren't even animals, but we'll let that slide. It's still a fun way to learn about living organisism. A1, J, and I each filed out our own brackets.  A1 has an advantage knowing so much more about animals and he scored the first point for the the Assassin Bug vs Bone Eater Caterpillar wild card.

Next came money mammals. A1 and J both scored 6 points, while a last minute change cost me. Our family score card is also 6. (For the family card are guessing each round with the two animals that moved on.)

Then it was onto Library Legends. This time A1 and I each scored 7 points while J's pick put her into last place.

If you want to participate in March Mammal Madness, you can get your bracket cards here. https://libguides.asu.edu/MarchMammalMadness/brackets#s-lg-box-34007003

Our favorite place to watch the battle recaps has been here.

Speaking of animals, here are fun animal facts from a few more states, written by A1:

Massachusetts: The state bird is the chickadee and it says CHICA-DEE-DEE-DEE! The turkeys have taken over towns, they block traffic and walk in parking lots and attack people so they need guidelines about what to do about an aggressive bird. Oh, and the laws say no scaring the pigeons and no horses upstairs. My main question is, "Why were there horses upstairs in the first place? "πŸ˜•πŸ΄

Maryland has horses that swim from island to island and steal food from coolers they've learned to open. People in Maryland are obsessed with crabs and eat them and have a crab museum.

South Carolina has even more strange horse laws such as horses must wear pants when around Fountain Inn, and you can't have them in a bath tub either! No one told me why someone would try to do thatπŸ˜•.
Besides having horses, South Carolina has crocodiles swimming in the water at the golf courses. I just want to go to see snakes and megalodon teeth. Ok, I want to see an angry crocodile, too.  Yes... angry. You can call me crazy, I don't care. I just really like the things that everybody else doesn't for the exact reasons they don't like them.

New Hampshire has very few reptiles! 😠 I like reptiles! And Pittsburg is stealing Maine animals. It has more moose than people! New Hampshire needs more reptiles especially snakes 🐍  that are really venomous and some angry crocs 🐊 and Pittsburg needs to give the moose back to Maine! 🫎 🌊 Oh, if it's too cold I will warm it up. ⛄❆🌨 ❌ But hey, that's not saying there are not good things, too. The state bug is the ladybug! Lucky them. It's also one of the only places you can see lynx and snowshoe hares. Maybe I shouldn't warm it up. 🌨⛄

For history, we also finished the first season of How the States Got Their Shapes.

Beyond the Basics this week included: cooking cinnamon rolls, piano lessons, Chess Club, Animal Science Club, Escape Room Club, and enjoying the outdoors.

〜〜〜〜〜

A2 had Joy school, reading, and story hour, where the teacher gave her a gift of bubbles- big bubbles. The kids had a lot of fun playing with them outdoors in the warm spring weather.

Her and J also made cinnamon rolls using a different recipe, we rode bikes and she got creative with crafts again.
