Just a Normal Week in January

We didn't go anywhere this week, which was a good thing, because all the kids ended up with strep throat.  Even being sick, they continued to work on their studies.

Reading, writing, and math continue to happen every day. A1 is really into writing a chapter book and J is writing scripts for sketch comedy.

J finished her art class.

All the kids joined in to make Chinese water color art.
J experimented with glittery water color paint, too.
K and A2 experimented with stamp art.

We continue to explore countries through both Google Earth and food. This week we made Jamaican Jerk Chicken with coconut rice and beans and Jamaican Curry.

We learned about the Jamaican bobsled team, and the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt. We listened to Reggae music, and explored a waterfall that emptied directly into the ocean.

In the Bahamas, you can swim with pigs! And turtles. They have around 700 islands, but only 30 are inhabited. They have pink beaches.- By J

In Cuba, they did tests that involved yellow fever.- By J (She's still traumatized from 6th grade LA) It is the largest island in the Caribbean. Children are required to go to government schools. Coca-Cola cannot be bought or sold there. J recognized their government as a totalitarian government.

Puerto Rico is a territory of the US. They can't vote for president, but they can elect someone to speak for them in the government. -By J

We also learned about the tense history between Haiti and the Dominican Republic who share the same island. Upon seeing a map, J immediately said they must hate each other. When I asked her why she thought that, she said, "Because they share an island but are separate counties."

Interestingly, Haiti is listed as the most dangerous country in the Caribbean, while its neighbor, the Dominican Republic, is the most visited Caribbean country.

Next, it's on to South America.
